Covers can fall into one of two categories: senseless rubbish or, as in the case of these beauties, labours of love crafted by dedicated fans, adding new layers of depth and meaning and the occasional gem that blows the original out of the water.

It’s not all serious artistry though; some bands are positively tongue-in-cheek about imitating their heroes. This pantheon of doppelgangers includes Peter Andrex, a man who reputedly taped six empty loo rolls to his stomach in order to emulate the physique of the 90s premier pop wonder.

On this page you’ll find more inspired names for cover bands, along with songs from their inspirations, bizarre tribute bands and 7digital’s picks of some of the greatest covers of all time.

Hayseed Dixie
Weapons Of Grass Destruction

Lock up your daughters! Board up the house! The boys from Deer Lick Holler are rolling through! Originally a bluegrass cover band of AC/DC (Hayseed Dixie - get it?), Weapons Of Grass Destruction sees the band expand to covers Alice Cooper’s ‘Poison’ and The Rolling Stones’ ‘Paint It Black’. Truly unique…

Richard Cheese
Tuxicity (Censored Version)

Ever wonder what System Of A Down or Cypress Hill would sound like if they were sung by the big bands of the 40’s and 50’s? You probably haven’t, but that's no reason to overlook this hilarious album of lounge covers of rock, metal and rap classics. Highlights include tongue-in-cheek versions of Weezer’s ‘Buddy Holly’ and Britney’s ‘Crazy'.

Dread Zeppelin
Re-Led-Ed

A reggae cover band of the rock titans featuring an Elvis impersonator as a lead singer (really), 1990’s Un-Led-Ed features laid back versions of Kashmir and Stairway to Heaven. Robert Plant was so enamored with the disc that he took to playing it over the PA before his solo gigs. High praise indeed.

Nouvelle Vague
Bande A Part

Lampooning their own Frenchness and art pretensions in their name, Nouvelle Vague specialize in producing Bossa Nova arrangements of 80’s classics. Bande À Parte focuses on new wave and features some very smooth interpretations of Buzzcocks’ ‘Ever Fallen In Love’ and Blondie’s 'Heart Of Glass'.
